Circle of Security
The Circle of Security is a relationship-based parenting model designed to help caregivers understand and meet the emotional needs of children. It was developed by psychologists and therapists as a way to promote healthy attachment between parents or caregivers and children. The model emphasizes the importance of secure attachment, which helps children feel safe and supported, and it aims to guide caregivers in how to respond to their child's needs in a way that fosters trust, confidence, and emotional well-being.
The Circle of Security is represented as a circular diagram, with the child at the center. The circle has two main areas:
The "Safe Haven": This is where children seek comfort and protection. Caregivers' role in this area is to be available and responsive when the child needs reassurance or help.
The "Exploration": In this area, children venture out to explore the world around them. Caregivers support this by allowing the child to explore safely, knowing they can return to their "safe haven" when needed.
The Circle also includes a variety of strategies for caregivers to help build a secure, responsive, and balanced relationship, such as:
Being attuned to the child’s emotions
Offering consistent and responsive caregiving
Helping the child navigate both the need for connection and the desire for independence
The goal of the Circle of Security is to help children grow with a sense of emotional security, which fosters resilience, healthy relationships, and positive emotional development throughout life.
